Segregation, Affinity Spaces, and How the Gospel Defeats Racism, with Mika Edmondson (Ep 106)

A hopeful conversation about racial issues that aims to bring clarity and unity into an arena that's often dominated by confusion and division.

UPDATE: Last week, an American denomination received some criticism over having affinity spaces for their African-American ministers.

Months ago, a similar dispute played out on social media (on X, aka Twitter) from a different denomination. As it was heating up, Mika Edmondson stepped in and spoke with grace and wisdom, answering some questions that I’ve had about it. So, while this week’s podcast timing looks like it’s a response to last week’s kerfuffle, it’s actually in response to an older one.

In this week’s episode, I interview Mike Edmondson about the hot-button topics of racial segregation in the American church, why affinity spaces matter, and how the gospel defeats racism.

Mika speaks with experience, wisdom, directness, and grace, generating more light than heat.

Some of what Mika and I talk about includes:

  • What is segregation?
  • What is “Hereditary Heathenism?”
  • Why did historically black churches begin?
  • What are “Affinity Spaces” and why do they matter?
  • How can we think and act more biblically about issues of race?

And more.
