As we enter WEEK 7 of the Bible Reading Coach podcast, we’ll read about the pivotal moment when the 10 spies give a bad report, leading the people to believe they can’t take the Promised Land. So God sentences them to wander in the desert for 40 years. So many years, and so many lessons – for them and us.
As many readers are aware, this segment of scripture (specifically Numbers 13) is where I got the title for my first book, The Grasshopper Myth.
As we read through this difficult section of scripture together, this podcast episode helps us to see that while the rules for priests and feasts don’t directly apply to us today, the underlying principles do. Note how the requirements to serve God are always about morality and holiness, not leadership skills or extreme abilities.
But even then, God cares for them. He takes a detailed count of all the people, and shows them how he will be with them and guide them as they move from place to place.
The Bible Reading Coach podcast is designed to help anyone read through the Bible in a year. In 10-15 minutes each Friday, I’ll introduce you to the passage for the following week, including:
- What it’s about
- How to deal with challenging passages
- How the original readers saw it
- How it applies today
- And much more
After listening, take the next week to read the passage on your own. This time you’ll have a clearer understanding of it.

8 Steps For Life-Transforming Sermons
A sermon is not a pep talk, a life hack, or a political screed. It should start and end with the biblical text, accurately studied and clearly presented.
