The Grasshopper Myth Hits a Major Milestone!

Testimonies come in every day from church leaders who have read The Grasshopper Myth. "A burden is lifted off my shoulders." “I have a renewed vision for what my church can really be." "Like a lot of cool water to a parched soul." "God has given me new strength, joy and hope for my great small church!” As I read words like these, it causes me to pray every day, "God, I don’t know what you’re doing with this, but whatever it is, please help me not to screw it up.” Not exactly the poetry of The Serenity Prayer, but it's just as sincere. Here's the latest sign of how many people are being touched by this little-book-that-could. While doing a quick inventory of books for our internal record-keeping, I realized that at some time in the past month or so... We sold our 5,000th copy of The Grasshopper Myth!

The Grasshopper Myth book stack

Testimonies come in every day from church leaders who have read The Grasshopper Myth.

  • “A burden is lifted off my shoulders.”
  • “I have a renewed vision for what my church can really be.”
  • “Like a lot of cool water to a parched soul.”
  • “God has given me new strength, joy and hope for my great small church!”

As I read words like these, it causes me to pray every day, “God, I don’t know what you’re doing with this, but whatever it is, please help me not to screw this up.”

Not exactly the poetry of The Serenity Prayer, but it’s just as sincere.

Here’s the latest sign of how many people are being touched by this little-book-that-could.

While doing a quick inventory for our internal record-keeping, I realized that at some time in the past month or so…

We sold our 5,000th copy of The Grasshopper Myth!

  • 5,000 copies
  • In less than two years
  • Of a self-published book
  • By an unknown author
  • On a subject no one is supposed to care about

Excuse me while I silently mouth the word “wow” on that one.

Ten Times What I Expected

I expected to sell 500 copies. Total.

That’s not enough to bother a publisher about. So, after writing the book, I called a printer and told him how much money I thought I’d have after selling 500 books. He told me I could print 2,000 copies for that amount of money, so that’s what I did.

I figured I’d have 1,500 books sitting in my garage for a few years, but at least they’d be paid for.

Since then, we’ve had three more printings (including one in Canada and one in Croatia) and we’re close to 1,000 sales on Kindle, too.

I’m amazed, honored and grateful, because the number of copies sold is just one indication of the size of the need that it’s meeting.

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who has bought a book for yourself or someone else (often in bulk) and to those who have told their friends about it. Thanks to those who have reviewed it on Amazon.com and GoodReads.com, to so many people who have Tweeted about it, blogged about it, chatted about it on Facebook, etc.

And a huge thanks to all of you who have responded to the ongoing conversation here at NewSmallChurch.com. The community we’re building here is as important as book sales.

I literally could not have done it without you.

A lot of great things are coming, including new conference speaking dates, a Spanish language translation and more. I’m much more optimistic for the next 5,000 than I was for the first 5,000.

The word about the value of innovative Small Churches is getting out there!
