The Grasshopper Myth? On TBN? Really? (Video)

Karl Vaters on TBNSince launching NewSmallChurch.com and publishing The Grasshopper Myth, I’ve found myself in some unexpected places.

Ministering to US Military Chaplains in Germany and Small Church pastors in Croatia are some of the highlights. But the most unexpected place I’ve been, wasn’t on the other side of the world. It was less than five miles from my house – the TV studio of TBN.

A couple months ago, I appeared on their Praise the Lord show at the invitation of guest host, Phil Munsey. And I even wore a suit and tie!

So how did this come about?

Shortly after its publication, a member of Phil Munsey’s church gave him a copy of The Grasshopper Myth. In the middle of reading the book, Phil emailed me, wanting to meet. By the time we met for lunch, he had finished reading it and we discovered that we shared a passion for ministering to other pastors.

Phil was very excited about the message of the book and wanted to get it out to as many people as possible, so he asked if I would appear with him the next time he guest-hosted on TBN. This was a great chance for me to talk to Small Church leaders who I could never reach in any other way, so I accepted his gracious offer.

The 15-minute interview was a very enjoyable experience. It’s a good introduction to The Grasshopper Myth and the ministry of NewSmallChurch.com. I think it also stands on its own as an encouragement to Small Church members and pastors.

  1. All during the interview, Phil kept saying I’ve started a movement. Which was nice of him, but it kind of freaked me out. All I’ve done is write a book and a blog. I do think there’s a movement going on in this arena, but I sure didn’t start it. But, like you said Glenn, there are pivotal moments. If I can be part of one I’ll be grateful.
